We already know this for a fact, but youd think they would at least conduct themselves with honor when an endorsement from an Oscar winning actress is involved. But apparently, they cant even do that, at least according to Octavia Spencers lawsuit against former employer Sensa. According to The Hollywood Reporter , Spencer has filed a lawsuit against weight loss company Sensa, which promises to make you as willowy as the fictional teenagerASansa Stark with a magical powder you sprinkle on your food. She is suing them for breach of contract and fraud after they fired her and failed to pay her for what she says are trumped-up, totally-on-them reasons. It all started innocently enough when the company first approached her and asked her to be a celebrity spokesperson. She said no at first, but after losing a few pounds using the product, agreed to do it on a few conditions: She says she passed up a $3 million offer from another weight loss company to take SensasA$1.25 million one (with an additional $100,000 going to charity) because the company agreed to various stipulations, including that the ad campaign wouldnt focus on significant weight transformation, wouldnt use before and after photographs and wouldnt be placed in tabloid magazines or on gossip websites. She also wanted the campaign to focus more on healthy lifestyle than dramatic weight loss, she didnt want to lose more than 20-25 lbs.

This study demonstrates that weight maintenance is easier to achieve than weight loss, says Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford, an obesity medicine and nutrition fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. However, this is true in persons of all ethnic backgrounds, not just those of African descent. Historically, weight loss programs are not as effective among black women compared to white women and men, says Gary Bennett, lead author of the study and director of obesity prevention at Duke University. Therefore, he says, his findings are promising. Theres not the same social pressure for black women to lose weight in the black community, he explains.

The Los Angeles-based trainer, who was born on a cattle farm in Tennessee and arrived in California some 20 years ago, said gone are the days when he believed it was possible to just exercise the pounds away. “It is all about your diet,” Harper, 48, said during a break from filming Season 15 of the long-running U.S. show. “I used to think a long time ago that you can beat everything you eat out of you and it’s just absolutely not the case.” Harper has spun his TV fame improving the fitness of people who are 100 pounds or more overweight into an empire with DVD workouts and the best-selling book “The Skinny Rules,” which offers tips to drop excess weight.

In this study, researchers looked for potential consequences of gestational diabetes, a condition in which glucose levels rise above the normal levels during the second and third trimesters. Gestational diabetes affects around four to eight per 100 pregnant women within the United States. The researchers recruited 45 women. 15 of them were pregnant women with gestational diabetes, another 15 were pregnant but did not have gestational diabetes and the last 15 were not pregnant and did not have the health condition. The researchers utilized a series of observational case control studies and discovered that a link between gestational diabetes and sleep apnea exists. said according to Medical Xpress . Reutrakul conducted the study at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL.

Diabetes in Pregnancy Linked to Sleep Apnea
Both microarousal and elevated oxygen desaturation index were associated with higher fasting glucose levels. The researchers pointed out that the study avoided confounding from abnormal circadian timing by timing the polysomnography test to the “usual sleep habits of the participants to increase relevance to real-life conditions.” But the lack of data on a wide range of other potential confounders was a limitation, along with the observational design and small sample size. The study was supported by the ResMed Foundation, the Diabetes Research Training Center at the University of Chicago, the National Institute on Aging, the Blum-Kovler Family Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health’s National Center For Advancing Translational Sciences. Reutrakul reported having no conflicts of interest to disclose.

Diabetes in the Bronx: epicenter of an epidemic
Diabetes is most prevalent among minority and low-income populations. To make matters worse, these people often have limited access to adequate health care. Poorer people are doing poorly, said Dr. Robert Morrow, a primary care physician in Riverdale. According to the city health department, diabetes is most prevalent among Hispanics and blacks, followed closely by Asians. The disease is deadly if not diagnosed and treated. Experts say diabetes increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage and amputations, if untreated. Clearly there is a difference in outcomes, says Dr. Morrow, referring to the higher number of deaths and amputations from diabetes related complications among minorities and low-income households.
